Lake Maggiore Lake Maggiore, or also called by the Italians, Lago Verbano is located on the border of Italy and Switzerland. This lake is 60 km long and thus the second largest lake in Italy. The landscape around the lake is very varied, from beautiful mountains to beautiful beaches. The northern part of Lake Maggiore is in Switzerland, where Italian is also spoken. Locarno, Ascona , Stresa and Luino are well known, charming towns situated along the lake, where many attractions can be found. Think of visiting beautiful islands like Isola Madre, Isola dei Pescatori and Isola Bella. But of course it is also possible to enjoy swimming, rowing, fishing and diving in the clear lake. The area around Lago Maggiore has warm summers, sometimes with temperatures above 30 degrees! So a private swimming pool is not a luxury with this kind of weather. During the warm summer evenings it is wonderful to have dinner in a typical restaurant where fresh fish from the lake is on the menu. What is also definitely recommended, is to sit outside at the villa and have dinner, combined with a good glass of Barbera, a wine that is very popular in this region. Lake Maggiore is easily accessible by car, but it is also possible to fly to Milan.
