TaorminaTaormina is an attractive, fashionable town located on the island of Sicily, once a Greek colony established in the 8th century before Christ. Taormina is situated against a mountain slope and the Etna volcano is visible from the town, and it can sometimes even be heard. Corso Umberto is the name of the main street, where loads of restaurants and shops can be found. One of the most known archaeological sites of Taormina is the ‘Teatro Greco’, or also called the Greek theatre. The Greeks started building it in the 3rd century before Christ, whereas the Romans finished it by adapting it to their more barbaric shows, such as gladiator shows. Nowadays the theatre looks stunning with its view over the sea, and in the distant the Etna. Some monuments that must be visited while staying in the area are ‘The Duomo’; Taormina’s main cathedral which was built around the year 1400 and ‘The Palazzo Corvaja’; dating back from the 10th century, originally built by the Arabs, but named afer the Corvaja family, who lived there from 1538 until 1945. The Museo Siciliano d'Arte e Tradizioni Popolari is situated near the Palazzo Corvaja, displaying the traditions of Sicilian’s everyday life over the past couples of centuries. Spending a day at the beach here is also possible, as it includes bays as Isola Bella and Mazzaro, which offer a great opportunity to relax. Near to Mazzaro beach, ‘The Grotto Azzurro’ can be found, which is one of the most famous grotto’s of Sicily, known for its clear blue water. In order to reach Taormina, it’s best to fly to Catania airport and from there drive to your destination.
