Sorrento Sorrento is a city located on the peninsula of Sorrentina on the Amalfi Riviera, in the region of Campania and the Naples province. Sorrento is a great base to explore the area, such as Naples, PompeÏ and the island of Capri, however Sorrento itself has plenty to offer as well! Frequent ferry services operate to Naples, Capri, and Positano. The main square of Sorrento is called Piazzo Tasso and is home to the Chiesa del Carmine Maggiore church, built in baroque style, and from the square the main shopping street Via San Cesareo can be reached. The Cathedral of Sorrento, built in the 11th century is also worth visiting. From the Piazzo Tasso you can also reach the decumanus; the principle street of Roman towns, and from there the Palazzo Veniero, which features Arab style influences and the Palazzo Correale, which has a Spanish- Catalan design. If you fancy a day of relaxation at the beach, Marina Grande offers a beautiful traditional beach where fishermen are still repairing nets by hand. If it is more history you would like to see, it is the Museo Correale di Terranova you must visit, established in an old villa, offering paintings, ceramics, crystal and watches. Also, there is a section displaying archaeological findings. If you like to enjoy a good meal and some nice drinks, you will love Sorrento! Why not try some of the local dishes like spaghetti con le noci; including Sorrento’s famous walnuts, gnocchi alla sorrentina or cannoli alla sorrentia; a dessert filled with custard. To accompany your dessert, try the delicious Limoncello, so typical for Sorrento. The nearest airport is Naples Capodichino, to which you can fly to and from there take the car or public transport.
