ArezzoArezzo is the capital of the province Arezzo located in Tuscany, about 80 kilometres southeast from Florence. The town has a very pleasant atmosphere as it is not as crowded as Florence and almost everything can be done by foot as Arezzo’s historic old town is relatively small. Arezzo is of course also famous because of the movie ‘La vita è bella’ was shot here. It is possible to do the ‘La vita è bella’ tour through the city, leading you to the main places and buildings from the movie. Arezzo’s main square, the Piazza grande, is the place where very last Saturday and first Sunday of the month the Fiera Antiquaria takes place, a real must for antique lovers. Also taking place twice a year on this square is the La giostra del Saracino, a medieval jousting tournament. The basilica di San Frascesco is one of the most known churches of Arezzo, as it houses one of the most famous fresco cycles of Italy; Legends of the True Cross by Piero della Francesca. Some other churches located in Arezzo are the Duomo, Pieve di Santa Maria, la chiesa di SS. Annunziata and la chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie. If you’re spending a day at Arezzo, it’s also nice to visit one or more museums. The Museo Statale d'Arte Medievale e Moderna includes works of art from the Middle Ages onwards, such as sculptures and paintings, Museo di Casa Vasari is the house of the painter Vasari, decorated with many fresco’s and if you like archaeology, the Museo Archeologico situated near the ruined Roman amphitheatre is something for you. Arezzo’s cuisine is characterized by hearty peasant dishes, such as bread soups with porcini mushrooms and different vegetables, called Acquacotta or Ribollita. Arezzo can be reached by flying to Pisa or to Florence.
