Lucca Lucca is the capital of the eponymous province, famous for its city walls dating back to the renaissance and sometimes named ‘the little brother’ of Firenze, only much more quiet. Lucca is located in the Northwest of Tuscany and is one of the richest cities of Italy. The city, which was developed by the Etruscans in the Roman times, still has a lot of Roman features. For example the “Piazza del Anfiteatro”; a round square where once the amphitheatre was situated and the 11th century “San Michele in Foro” church, built in Pisan Roman style. Both of these places are must-sees during your stay in Lucca. Another important church is the 13th century Duomo di San Martino, in which the Volto Santo (Holy Face), a wooden statue of Christ can be found. A very special asset of Lucca is of course its old city walls, where inside cars are not allowed and nowadays a pedestrian promenade is created on top of these walls. You can take a stroll on this promenade or through the green park along the walls, filled with baroque statues of kings and queens. Cyclists are a common image in Lucca, as the town is relatively flat and the city walls offer the perfect setting for cycling, so why not rent a bicycle for the day! If you are into opera, you will know that Lucca was the birth place of the famous operatic composer Giacomo Puccini. His birth house has been transformed to a museum, situated in Piazza della Cittadella where you will find a bronze figure of Puccini in the centre. After having visited this wonderful museum, why not go to one of the many generations old eateries and have a bowl of farro soup, so typical for this area or enjoy a cappuccino on a terrace accompanied by local recipe cantuccini cookies. To reach Lucca you can fly to Pisa, which is located at around 30 km from Lucca, or to Florence, which is situated at around 85 km from Lucca. From there a car can be hired to reach your destination or you can take public transport.
